Managing holiday stress
Monday, Nov. 27, 2017

Gifts, festivities, family gatherings, these are a few things that come to mind when we think about the holidays. But, in the season of giving, we also feel stress. So, although the holidays are a joyful time to connect with those we love, it can be a particularly stressful time for many.
Try these tips to manage stress so you can thoroughly enjoy the holiday season.
- Stay organized. Plan ahead and write a list of priorities. Bake treats early and stick them in the freezer. Put up outside décor before the weather turns. Do you know what you’re making? Stock your pantry with necessities, so you’re not scrambling for last minute ingredients.
- Stick to a budget. Don’t spend more than you’ve planned. It’s easy to get caught up in the moment, or feel pressured to buy gifts, but you don’t want to spend the rest of the year trying to pay off holiday spending. It’s okay to say no! Make a donation to a local charity instead of gift giving. It’s a feel-good alternative.
- Keep up with healthy habits. Regular sleep, eating well and exercise is important. Especially at a time where stress can affect your immune system and seasonal colds run rampant. So eat your leafy greens, aim for 30 minutes of regular exercise and stay well rested to keep you on the move.
- Reach out. Get support if you need it. For some, the holidays can be a trigger for an emotional time in one’s life. Share your feelings with a confidant or speak with a mental health professional.
- Take time for yourself. Recharge your batteries. Setting aside time for yourself, during this hectic period, can help you refresh before tackling the to-do list. Even 15 minutes will do! Meditate, read a book, take a walk or get a massage.
- Share the tasks. You don’t have to do everything yourself. Delegating tasks can save you time and energy. Have family or friends help with shopping, wrapping gifts, decorating and preparing a meal.
A little planning can help prevent stress that is all too common during the holidays.
