Injured on the field? Physio + sport medicine can help

It’s important to remain active through all stages of life to combat the negative effects of a sedentary lifestyle. One way many people stay fit and healthy is through recreational sport. But, whether you are an elite athlete or weekend warrior, sport injuries are something that do not discriminate.
Physiotherapy is an integral intervention for any athlete who has sustained an injury on the field of play. In the more acute stages, physiotherapists triage athletes entering a clinic to determine the severity of the injury. If there is suspicion of a break or significant muscular damage, a referral will be made to the athlete’s treating physician for further medical intervention. However, once all serious conditions have been ruled out, physiotherapists often assist through all stages of the healing process. In the peak inflammatory phase, physiotherapists can assist and limit the pain around the affected area.
Physiotherapy also helps to restore normal mobility around the injured area, as well as strengthen and stabilize any weakened areas.
Through the rehabilitation process, if the physiotherapist anticipates any areas of concern in progress or degree of healing, a referral is often made to a sport medicine physician. A sport medicine physician is a doctor who has undergone special training to deal with sport and fitness issues. These referrals are frequently covered by government funding.
